Ken Spiering – Painter, Sculptor
Wide diversity in my work for public spaces reveals my intent to craft artwork that is unique and specific to what serves each project best.
Prior to creating this work, I research the nature of selected site(s) (or in developing the best appropriate site), as well as character of surrounding architecture, use of the building and/or space, structural and material possibilities, client’s needs, demographics of audience, and make-up of community. I seek then to develop ideas using imagery that is both recognizable yet abstracted toward larger inclusion of the meaning of its intended use, the history and mystery of both our culture and the culture of its destination.
Artistically I remain devoted to imagery that has credibility of existing somewhere as reality, even if the overall image is completely conceptual. There are abundant metaphors iconic to our human condition in the natural world. I look for them to serve as the content of my artwork. Appealing craftsmanship of plausible visions in cast bronze, welded steel, and copper enamel continues to serve as my language.
