Janet Crosby – Glass
I have been melting glass with a torch since 2003.
Like many artists, my love of art is all over the place — drawing, painting, knitting, metalwork, photography, jewelry — but glass is home. My earliest memories of art fairs and artists are spending all of my time at the glassblower area, mesmerized by the flame and the melting glass.
I love glass for the color(!), the interplay of light, and the fact that glass doesn’t fade in sunlight. I also love that I cannot touch what I am working on or even appreciate the final color scheme (at melting temperature, glass changes color) until when my piece is ready to come out of the kiln. Even after all of these years, opening the kiln is like Christmas morning.
Glass is a versatile medium. Fusing is using a kiln to melt and shape glass. I am learning to fuse glass so that I can incorporate my torchworked glass into larger pieces.
