Chris Kelsey – Ceramics, Sculpture
As a musician with an interest in geology, I often see rhythm in the landscape’s repeated forms and curving lines and I wonder how they were made. I’m inspired by geologic forces simultaneously building up and tearing down the landscape.
My work reflects my interest in the many patterns and textures created by earths geologic forces.
Using clay as a medium allows me to create colors and textures inspired by the natural world. I’m always trying different processes and firing methods to make organic forms and textures. I use stoneware and porcelain clays, some is thrown on the potters wheel, some is rolled into slabs for hand-building, some is carved using a wire. The pieces are fired in an electric kiln or a wood-fired kiln depending on the type of surface I think would best suit each one.
